2. Long Tail Keywords + PPC = Pr0fits

3. Preview of another KRA Pro Feature

4. Video Editing Suite for Windows

5. January Niche Blueprint Released

Hi again

Hope you have had a profitable week. I was talking with a friend this week who works long hours, and wants to change his job. He was asking me about affiliate marketing.

The problem is that he doesn’t have savings, and so needs to be earning from day one (which isn’t going to happen in this business), or start part time while he keeps his existing job. The problem with the latter is that he does not know where he will find the time.

The central idea behind the way I run my own business is simple:

Do something everyday that helps your business succeed.

You can write an article, email potential link partners, search out new products to promote, learn how to create a simple web page, learn how to FTP etc .

As long as you do something everyday, your business will move forward. This is important to remember for those starting this part-time. It is often very easy to make the excuse “I don’t have time”, but that is all it really is - an excuse.

Everyone has time to do at least one small thing a day to help their business move forward. Those who really want to succeed would consider getting up an hour earlier, or going to bed an hour later. I know that when we first started our Internet business, my wife worked through the night, and I would get up a couple of hours before going to work to get some stuff done (and at the time, I headed out to work at around 6:30 am!).

So if you haven’t yet started on your Internet business, what’s your excuse?

1. Long Tail Keywords = Targeted Traffic
– — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — –

I am sure you have heard of long-tail keywords before, right? In case you haven’t, I strongly urge you to go to Google right now, and search for a little information on long tail keywords.

Just in case you “don’t have time”, think of long tail keywords as multi-word phrases which visitors type in at the search engines when searching for information on a niche.

When you have done your keyword research on a niche, and you look through the data, long-tail keywords typically have very few searches (in other words, the demand is low).

e.g. Using KRA I have quickly pulled out some of the long-tail keywords from a camera niche:

Count 24Hours Keyword

2 1 Kodak camera digital optical zoom 10x evf
2 1 camera cx4300 digital kodak uk
2 1 kodak 8 digital picture frames
2 1 kodak c530 digital camera deals
2 1 how to convert digital photos to kodak easyshare format
2 1 digital and photo and formats and kodak

Do you see how Wordtracker calculates that each of those phrases is only search for once a day?

No-one in their right mind would optimize a page for those terms, would they?

Well, think again. These are just the sort of phrases you should be taking seriously.

Let’s think of it this way.

Here is the most searched for phrase in the little database of kodak camera research I used in the example above:

Count 24Hours Keyword

263 196 kodak digital cameras

Wordtracker estimates that this phrase is searched for 196 times a day. It would be great if you could get a top listing in Google for this phrase, but with 410,000 competing pages (searched for in quotes), it is unlikely to happen any time soon.

Also, even if you did get a top 10 listing, what would those visitors be looking for if they had just typed in “kodak digital cameras” in at the search engine?

Would a page ranking well for “kodak digital cameras” be a good match for someone searching for a Kodak Easyshare digital camera? Well, maybe, but only if you were targeting easyshare cameras on that page. Let’s get even more “long-tail”. What if someone was searching for one of these:

Kodak EasyShare C533 5.0 Megapixel
Kodak EasyShare Z612 6.1 Megapixel
Kodak EasyShare C743 7.0 Megapixel
Kodak EasyShare Z710 7.1 Megapixel
Kodak EasyShare C875 8.0 Megapixel

Would that top ranked web page (for “kodak digital camera”) be what these searchers are looking for?

The answer to that is probably no. The term “kodak digital camera” is just not specific enough. People finding that page could be looking for just about anything on kodak digital cameras. These people are looking for information, not for buying a camera. Visitors finding your page by typing in “kodak digital camera” at Google are unlikely to buy from your site.

If, however, someone was typing in:

kodak easyshare 5.0mp digital camera pink

.. what do you think the motive of this searcher is? I would personally assume that this person wanted to buy a pink easyshare 5 mega pixel digital camera. The phrase is just too specific to be a search for information. This person has already done their research, and wants this one.

Long-tail keywords represent laser-targeted traffic.

The big problem with creating pages around long-tail keywords is that people think they must create one page around each product. While that will certainly work, its a lot of work (although product datafeeds can simplify that task).

My preferred method is to theme my website pages. Let’s take an example.

Knowing that there is a market for Kodak Easyshare cameras, I would go to Wordtracker and do a quick keyword research session of Kodak Easyshare. I’d import the data into Keyword Results Analyzer (KRA), and then I’d get KRA to tell me what the theme words are for my page. Here is part of that report:

Unique Keywords:

247, easyshare
247, kodak
73, digital
70, camera
24, frame
23, printer
19, dock
16, picture
14, mp
14, review
14, software
10, reviews
7, photo
7, zoom
6, c613
6, c813
5, 5300
5, series
5, v803
5, z1275
4, 5.0mp
4, 5100
4, c530
4, c875
4, how
4, m753
4, v1003
4, z712
4, z812
4, zd710

These words represent just a few of over 200 that KRA found in phrases related to Easyshare digital cameras. The number next to each word give an indication of how important a word is (the higher the count, the more important). As you look down that list, you will also find the camera model number, and there were a lot more in the list that I haven’t included in this snap-shot.

It would be fairly easy to create a single page that contains most of the relevant words relating to Easyshare digital cameras, or even split this topic into several articles on easyshare cameras. It would be easy enough to lump together 5 MP cameras, and create a page, listing the model numbers of the 5 MP cameras, and repeating for 6MP, 7 MP and so on. This way, you can actually create pages that rank for a number of the laser-targeted long tail phrases.

To give oyu real world figures, I have a 15 page website built on these themeing techniques. That 15 page site has been found for over 2300 different phrases - that’s an average of 150 different phrases per page.

For more details on the techniques I use, look at my Fat Content Course.

2. Long Tail Keywords + PPC = Pr0fits
– — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — –

While I concentrate on using the long-tail to get fr.ee traffic, through themeing, Dave Tropeano has developed a system that uses Pay-Per-Click with the long-tail to get phenomenal results.

Check out the Commission Junction screenshot on this Long tail keywords homepage.

You can see that Dave has an EPC of $93.22 for that period. That means he averaged $93.22 in commission, for every 100 visitors he sent to the merchant.

Dave has published his system in a video based course. The videos are downloaded to your own computer, so you don’t have to watch them online like so many courses these days.

The first main video lasts around 30 minutes and shows an overview of his system. I was excited watching this because I could see the potential of the system.

There are then a series of shorter videos which take you through the exact steps Dave uses in his own business to carry out the steps he outlined in the overview. These videos are clear to follow, and really did teach me a thing or two.

One of the things responsible for Dave’s success is high quality, targeted landing pages. The course comes with a fantastic plugin that allows you to create landing pages that are “optimized to provide on target presell content to the visitor”. No matter what the visitor searches for, this script will generate the landing page that matches their query, and ensure you get a good quality score from Google.

I love this course, and to be honest, am surprised that Dave is selling it so cheaply. I am sure that if he had turned this into a physical product, it would be selling for $297+.

If you don’t do PPC marketing, then you should probably pass on this course because you would need PPC to make the most out of the system. In that case, a better option would be to look at the techniques I use (see link in section 1 of this newsletter).

However, if you are already using PPC, or want to get started in PPC, this course could be just what you need. I personally don’t do any PPC at the moment, but I am going to dust off my Adwords account and give it a go very soon.

If you are interested in this course, you can get it on the long tail keyword course homepage.

3. Preview of another KRA Pro Feature
– — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — –

I have been inundated from KRA owners asking me when KRA Pro will be released. I still don’t have a definite answer but I hope it will be early in February.

The last video I showed you of KRA Pro, highlighted the site blueprinting feature. Here, you could plan an entire site, and get KRA to find the most relevant theme words for each page - in minutes. Here is that video in case you missed it:

Site Blueprinting

This next video shows you another exciting feature that I finished this week. Here is the link:

Keyword Sniffer

Finally, to answer another question I am getting a lot, existing KRA owners will be able to upgrade to KRA Pro, simply by paying the difference in the two prices (whatever that may be). KRA Pro will cost considerably more than the standard version of KRA.

4. Video Editing Suite for Windows
– — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — –

I have been pressing ahead with videos to help promote my websites, and wanted a video editor to help me create professional looking “home movies”. After looking at a number of tools in different price ranges, I have found one that I think is superb value for money. If you are also looking for a video editing suite, do have a look at Sony Vegas.

5. January Niche Blueprint Released
– — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — –

The first Niche Blueprint of 2008 was released earlier this week, and I think this one is special. As I looked for a niche for this blueprint, I took into account some of the testimonials sent to me over the last few years. One of the most popular past blueprints was a household electronics item, as it offered a great opportunity for selling affiliate products and/or using Adsense on the site.

An email from one customer who had bought that “household appliance” blueprint stated that his site was making around $6000 per month. While that level of income cannot be guaranteed, nor should it be expected from a single website, to have a chance at making that kind of money, you need a well-thought out blueprint in a niche area that isn’t too over-crowded. That is what I looked for. Here is my chosen niche:

Topic: Coffee Related Products

This niche is an exciting one. Not only are coffee and coffee related products like grinders, mugs, gift baskets etc available to promote on your site, but also the whole world of coffee machines. Expresso and cappuccino makers are just two sought after machines that can have high pr1ces.

This niche blueprint identifies two different ideas for a site around coffee, and provides a detailed break-down of which phrases to include on your homepage and main pages, as well as all the other necessary stuff like affiliate program recommendations, the special version of KRA with the coffee data already plugged in, and everything else that is included on the sales page. There are decisions you will need to make, which will ensure your site is unique.

Promoting household electronics like coffee machines is an exciting prospect, with good pay-offs. The top merchant I have identified for affiliate products has a 3 months EPC of over $60. Remember EPC is average earnings per 100 clicks. That’s isn’t an estimate, that is the actual average figure for this merchant of all affiliate promoting them.

Here are the stats for the keyword research you get with this blueprint.

Total Phrases: 3738

508 of these phrases have 5 or more daily searches, with less than 1000 competing pages in Google, representing 5403 searches a day at Google.

384 of these phrases have 5 or more daily searches, with less than 100 competing pages in Google, representing 4114 searches a day at Google.

356 of these phrases have 5 or more daily searches, with less than 10 competing pages in Google, representing 3815 searches a day at Google.

94 of these phrases have 5 or more daily searches, with less than 0 competing pages in Google, representing 934 searches a day at Google.

The Blueprint is available for $35 while stocks last. As always, only 100 will be sold.
