1. Wordpress Tutorial - II
– — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — –
If you missed last week’s tutorial where we looked at manually installing Wordpress, you can view it at the blog here:
Just click through to the Wordpress tutorial section.
A few people commented on the blog, or sent me questions about the manual install. There seems to be a number of people who do not want to install Wordpress manually, and instead want to use Fantastico that their host provides.
While Fantastico is a nice quick way to install Wordpress (BTW I have added a video showing how to install with Fantastico), I would highly recommend EVERYONE installing Wordpress at least once using the manual install method.
This is not very technical, and it is good practice using an FTP program like Filezilla. There will come a time when you need to use FTP (like in todays tutorial).
If you know your FTP login details for your domain, there is absolutely nothing difficult about a manual install.
Don’t know your FTP login details? Then ask your host as you should have been sent this information, or be able to find it in your control panel.
If there are any specific difficulties with the manual install, simply leave a comment after the MANUAL INSTALL video on the blog, and I will answer those questions.
OK, Wordpress is installed, and you are ready to start creating your site, right?
Er, no.
Wordpress requires a fair bit of customisation before we can begin, and this is where we are starting today. I want to show you how to install a Wordpress Plugin.
For those who don’t know what a Wordpress Plugin is, think of it as an additional piece of software that someone has created, that provides EXTRA features in Wordpress.
e.g. There are Wordpress plugins that can help manage spam comments, plugins to make Wordpress easier to use, etc.
The plugin we are installing in this tutorial is an XML Google Sitemaps plugin. This plugin does what its name implies - creates a Google sitemap, and uploads it to Google. In fact, whenever you add new content, your sitemap is updated with this plugin. Cool eh?
This is the first of several plugins we need to add to Wordpress. Fortunately, all plugins are installed in roughly the same way, so once you learn how to do this, you can install any plugin I recommend you add.
You WILL NEED an FTP program to follow this tutorial, and I recommend you download Filezilla. It is an excellent fr.ee FTP program. You can get it here:
Download and install the Filezilla Client from that page.
The other thing you need is your domains FTP login details, so if you are unsure, go ask your host. Without these, you will not be able to follow this, or future Wordpress tutorials.
Ready?
OK, you can go and watch the video at:
When you get there, click the link to the “Wordpress Tutorials” (top menu, or right hand menu).
On the page that loads, look for the installing Wordpress Plugins page.
If you have specific questions or problems, please leave a comment after watching the video. You do not need to register to leave a comment.

2. June Niche Blueprint
– — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — –
The June Niche Blueprint has just been released. This is quite a big niche with over 4700 phrases. Amazingly, 149 of the phrases have ZERO Competing pages in Google. Just these 149 phrases amount to 1036 searches a day in Google alone.
I have also identified around 350 “question” phrases in this niche. These are phrases that are requests for information, and therefore make great articles for your site.
For more information on this Niche Blueprint, go to:
.. and click the link to the June Blueprint top right (you may need to refresh your browser once the page displays).

3. Too technical?

If you were out of work, and looking for a job, imagine you saw an advert for a job that was local, had good pay, and you could do 90% of the job without any additional training.
Would you go for the job?
What about the 10% you couldn’t do?
Knowing that there would be a lot of interest in the job, you are aware that some people will be able to do 100% of the job already. That leaves you at a distinct disadvantage. If you turn up for an interview, and tell the interviewer that you are not sure you can do 10% of the job, but the other 90% would be a breeze, what do you think your chances are?
As I see it, here are your choices:
1. Go to the interview and lie about what you are capable of. Worry about the 10% after you get the job.
2. Go to the interview and be honest, telling the interviewer that you would need training for 10% of the job.
3. Take the initiative, and go and learn the other 10% BEFORE going to the interview. If you don’t get the job, you’ll at least have some new skills to add to your C.V.
I would suggest that anyone who was serious about the job would take the third option. That is the only option for a person who is actually taking this job opportunity seriously.
You know, this is how I see Internet Marketing.
When I first started, I knew 0% of the job.
Today I know a lot more, but am still a long way off 100%. Internet Marketing is one of those jobs where you have to take continuous training to improve, and stand any chance of staying in the business.
OK, so why have I mentioned this?
Well, as you know, I am running a tutorial in this newsletter to show how Wordpress can be used as a site editor, and resulting Wordpress sites can look anything but blog-like.
In some of the emails and comments I have received after the first tutorial on installing Wordpress manually, I was disappointed to see that many people thought that installing Wordpress with FTP was TOO DIFFICULT.
Let me tell you a secret…..
FTP is not difficult. Neither is changing permissions on files. Sure, if you didn’t have FTP software like Filezilla to do this you would have a few more problems, but the fact is, FTP software was created to help you achieve these tasks WITHOUT technical knowledge.
Its very similar to creating a website in HTML. Many people would just not be able to do it if website building software was not available. How many people can code an entire site in HTML using Windows Notepad?
Website Editors were created to remove most of the technical aspects of web site building from the user.
FTP software was created to remove the technical aspects of uploading, downloading, setting file permissions, etc from the user.
I would suggest that anyone not prepared to learn FTP, is also not prepared to succeed at Internet Marketing.
For these tutorials, I am here to help you. I am here to answer your questions (no matter how stupid they may sound), and teach you how to use all of the tools necessary to create a website. If there is a step you just cannot work out how to do, leave a message on the Tutorial blog, and I will answer it. If you need more specific instructions on something, I may even create a new video to help. You are getting help for fr.ee here, so don’t waste the opportunity - get involved.
If you are following this Wordpress course because you want to learn Wordpress, think about this. Its not always going to be easy. You will have to work at it, and USE Wordpress frequently before you get the hang of things. This is what learning is all about - familiarising yourself with the tool, and practising until it becomes second nature.
Commit to learning all of the techniques as I go through them.
If I go through a technique that you think is too “technical”, try it anyway. If you fail, try again. If you need help, leave a comment on the blog, and I’ll help.
If you do this, you will succeed at mastering Wordpress.
More importantly you will be moving along a well-trodden path - one that all successful marketers take on their way to mastering their new “job”.
