4. Page Numbering In Word

When you are creating Kindle books, page numbers are not important (and should not be used) because of the way Kindle devices format page layouts on the fly, depending on users preferences within their Kindle.  However, with physical books, they become very important.

Microsoft Word is not always intuitive, and inserting page numbers does cause a lot of problems.  In this short tutorial, I want to show you how to insert page numbers in Word.

We’ll start numbering from the Introduction of the book (which is actually page 8 of the book), and we’ll start the page numbers at 1.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Click at the top of the page where you want to start your page numbering.
  2. On the Page Layout tab of the ribbon bar, click Breaks and select continuous from the list:image2
  3. On the Insert tab of the ribbon bar, click Page Number and move your mouse down to Bottom of Page, and select the position where you want page numbers to appear.image_thumb1
  4. Word will show you the Design tab active in the ribbon bar.  In the Navigation section, DESELECT the Link to Previous button.
  5. Scroll back in your Word document to the previous page (the one before your continuous page break, and select the page number with your mouse:image11.. then hit the delete key to delete it.
  6. Click on the page of your document where you want page numbers to begin (so that this section of your book is selected).
Go back to the Insert tab, and click Page Number, Format Page Number:image14Select Start at: and enter 1 in the box.
    Click OK to save.
  7. Double click somewhere on your document to get out of the edit mode.  Your page numbering should now start at 1, on the page you specified.  There should be no page numbering on pages before this “first page”.

If you missed any of the other tutorials in this series, you can get the Createspace Tutorials here.

I haven’t completed the tutorials on this site.  Instead, I’ve re-written most of them, added a lot of new ones (plus a number of video tutorials), and created a complete “Self-Publishing on Createspace” book that will take you through the entire process of converting your manuscript to Createspace format.  You can buy the book on Amazon Kindle.

I also have my Kindle Publishing book available on Kindle, together with the Self-Publishing on Amazon book that contains both of the first two books.
