This week:
1. One Month Kick-Start Plan For a New Site
2. Some Incoming Links Can Help Your Rankings…
3. Other Stuff
Hi again.
My daughter has finally come down with chicken pox. She has been very grumpy for a few days, and the first spot appeared last Wednesday. She has actually not developed too many spots so far, and we are hoping for only a “light covering”. Other news over here in Tenerife is that today is the “Big Party”. I mentioned last week that May is party month in Tenerife, but today is the big one in my local town. Everyone dresses up in traditional costumes, and drinks vast quantities of the excellent local wines. I personally wont be dressing up, but will be out with my camera, so hopefully I can post up a few shots next week for you to look at if I dont overdo it on the wine ;o)

1. One Month 2 Step Kick-Start Plan For a New Site
—————————————————
Everyone has been there. You have just completed a new site and need traffic. What do you do next? Well, here is my own personal plan for kick-starting a new site. Be warned, it does take some time and commitment, but the rewards are worth the efforts.
1. Write some articles for submission to article directories. My own goal is to submit one article a day for 30 days, and to submit each article to several article directories. While I personally user Article Announcer for most of these submissions, I have also tried and liked a much cheaper alternative.
Now, before we leave this stage of the plan, there is an important twist. I divide these 30 articles up into groups. How many groups depends on how many “main pages” my site has. If I have 6 main page, I have 6 groups of 5 articles, one group assigned to each main page. I then create a different resource box for each article. Each resource box links back to the main page it is assigned to, and each of the 5 articles use a different keyword phrase in the link.
I’ll submit the articles one a day for 30 days, by submitting an article from each group in turn.
2. Submit the site to directories (including DMoz.org). I try to submit the site to 5 directories a day for the next 30 days. That’s 150 directories in total. You can do this manually, but again I use a tool to help speed this up.
That’s it. A simple 2 step plan for the first month of any new site. It takes work, but it will get your site indexed and started on the road to ranking well.
Month 2 and beyond requires less work. I’ll only submit one article a week, and finally one article a month after a couple of months. This plan works, but as with anything in this business, your site will only do well long-term if it contains quality, unique information.

2. Some Incoming Links Can Help Your Rankings…
—————————————————
…while others have little or no effect. Some can even hurt you!
Now, just so you to relax a bit, let me just explain the last bit. The links that can hurt you are the ones coming from your own sites on unrelated niches, especially if those links are reciprocated. Cross-linking your own sites use to be a great way to get a new site indexed and a PR boost. However, as search engines have evolved, so has the definition of spamming. Cross-linking unrelated sites you own is a big no no, so don’t do it.
Now, what about those links that have little or no effect on your rankings?
1. Well, these include links on other sites that use the rel=”nofollow” tag somewhere in the link. This is a relatively new tag embraced by the search engines to stop link spamming from blogs. When a site links to you and puts that bit of code in the link HTML, the search engines do not follow the link, do not spider the destination link, and do not pass on Page Rank or Link Reputation to the destination URL.
2. Another type of link that wont help you is when the webpage that has the link uses a meta tag similar to this one:
meta name=”robots” content=”noarchive,nofollow,noindex”
This meta tag tells the search engines not to spider the links on the page, not to index those links, and not to archive the current page.
These are two techniques are things you should look out for when exchanging links with other webmasters. If they use either technique, you get no benefit other than the possibility of visitors following the link to your site. However, they obviously do not help your search engine rankings.
3. A third type of link has little or no effect on your rankings. These are the ones that are on low PR pages with lots of other outgoing links on the page. The effect on your rankings will be negligible. Any PR that exists on the page will be divided between all outgoing links on the page. The lower the PR, the less benefit you get. The more links on the page, the less benefit you get.
This should be another consideration on exchanging links. Not so much the PR of the page, as that will increase over time, but the number of links on the page.
4. A 4th type of link that wont help you, is a link on an unrelated page. e.g. if your site is about RGP contact lenses, a link to your site on a page about banana plantations wont help you much. Search engines are certainly better able to decide on link relevancy than a lot of webmasters think, and this capability is only going to improve. My advice is, and always has been – only get links from highly related sites or pages.
Pheew! There is a lot to check when you get incoming links, isn’t there?
Well, now onto the links that will help you.
There really is only one category here – links on quality, highly related pages. If the link is not reciprocated, so much the better.
Some sites are called “Authority Sites”, and links on these will benefit you the most. These types of site typically have high PR, and it is also typically difficult to get links from them.
It is because of this difficulty in getting incoming authority links that I was very excited to read about a new product that was coming out which promises “Unlimited Supply of PageRank 5+ Backlinks from AUTHORITY SITES…”
You will have seen a lot of top marketers promoting this product (even before it has been released), so I was excited to get a preview copy.
As I was going through the materials, I was initially very excited. This was something I had not thought of, or tried myself. What’s more, I could see how it worked, and that it would work.
I also did a bit of digging, and found some quality website were using this technique.
So, a technique that can get you high PR backlinks with just a few minutes of your time. Sounds almost too good to be true….
Well, as I continued reading the book, my initial excitement died down. Later in the book, the author describes some applications of this technique that fully automate this link building, and therein lies my one big concern about this technique. It undoubtedly works, and works well, but, as with all revolutionary techniques like this, it will be picked up by spammers, and abused. If and when this happens, the search engines will need to find ways to combat its effectiveness (much like they did for blog and ping).
This book opened my eyes to a new method of getting backlinks, and I WILL be using some of the techniques I learnt, though I will be using them sparingly.
If you want to learn more about this technique labelled as “the new blog & ping”, visit this page, and sign up for the notification list. You will then be notified the moment it is released.

3. Other Stuff

The May Niche Blueprint was released this week. This blueprint is different from all previous blueprints in that it was written primarily for those wishing to build an Adsense Site. The keywords in the list have some of the highest cost per clicks of any phrases, with many estimated at over $30 on Adwords.
Those wanting to promote merchants can too, but I have not carried out an extensive research into affiliate programs. I have only listed one which has a 3 Month ECP well over $100. This is one of the highest EPCs I have seen.
This niche is more tightly focused than any Blueprint before, with 689 keyword phrases.
You also get a special bonus. Dave Tropeano has written a Report giving details on “Maximizing Adsense revenue”. He has also includes some accompanying spreadsheet files showing expected CPCs for Google for all of the phrases in this blueprint. This report has some excellent information, and was written exclusively for this Blueprint.
In addition, I have included two extra text files, showing Overture data for the phrases. Those who own Keyword Results Analyzer will be glad to know they get both the Google, and the Overture Databases of Keywords to play with.
If you want to buy this blueprint, visit the Niche Blueprint site and click on the link to the May 2006 Blueprint (top right). As always, only 100 will be sold. More than half have already been sold.
