EzSEO Newsletter # 233

Hi Again

During the last couple of weeks, our 3 month old son has been quiet sick.  He has laryngitis, a lot of mucus, and to make things worse, he is teething.  We are having to suck the mucus out with a tube, squirt saline up his nostrils, and use one of those asthma puffers (and a face mask) on him three times a day.  As you can imagine, he screams the place down.  I can’t help but wonder what permanent trauma he’ll get from this later in his life.  Could flashbacks trigger a kind of "alien abduction" nightmare where he is having his brains sucked out?  I hope not.  I wonder how much of the early stuff does affect us later in life.  I’d be interested to read more if anyone knows any good resources on this type of research.

In this issue I have written a tutorial that shows you how to use SSI (and why you should use SSI) on your WordPress sites (there is also a tutorial those creating traditional html sites), plus a look at Michael Campbell’s new product.

In this issue:

1. Michael Campbell’s Vault

2. WordPress Tutorial

3. Converting a site to WordPress

1. Michael Campbell’s Vault

Michael Campbell was my first mentor.  His early teachings were instrumental in not only getting me motivated, but also giving me the "tools" required to succeed online.

In the last week or two, Michael has opened the doors on a new site and I was one of the first to get in there.  It is jam packed with useful information, tips and success secrets, and the great content just keeps coming.

The topics covered in the vault include (or will include) just about everything you need to know on:

* Traffic Generation
* Social Media Strategies
* Mininets and Linking
* Affiliate Revenue Models
* Audio and Podcasting
* Video Production Techniques
* Motivation and Inspiration
* Creating Your Own Products
* Building Joint Venture Partners
* Persuasion and Conversion
* Sales, Advertising and Marketing
* List and Readership Building
* SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Of course, if you post specific questions, Michael will also answer those.  This site is building up into a comprehensive library on Internet Marketing from one of the true greats in this niche.

The site has three levels of membership depending on the help you need.  You can join as a basic member, and that gives you full access to the site.  The Pro Members also get  30 minutes of email support a month as well as the chance to interact on the site and post questions.  The Elite members (only 10 of these) also get Michael’s personal cell phone number where you can call him for advice – 45 minutes a month if necessary.

You can get more details on his site, and even phone him if you want more information on his program.  Details are here:

..and no, that isn’t an affiliate link.  I just like the vault.

2. WordPress Tutorial
– — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — –

Last week we looked at how to use Tags with your WordPress blogs and actually make the tag pages work for us.  I showed you one of the tag pages on a site of my own, plus a screenshot of a few commissions that the tag page has generated. That article has brought in a lot of good feedback, and a lot of other questions which I will try to address in future tutorials.

This week, I have written a tutorial about using SSI on WordPress blogs.  For those who don’t know what SSI is, it stands for Server Side Includes, and it is one of the most powerful weapons an Internet Marketer has at his disposal.

I have used SSI extensively in my own Dreamweaver sites over the last few years to allow me to rapidly update aspects of my site (especially affiliate offers).  Find out how SSI can save you a lot of time on your own WordPress sites and why it is such a powerful technique.

I have posted the tutorial up on:

http://affiliate-minder.com

Just click the menu link top right to WordPress Tutorials, and you’ll find the tutorial in that section entitled "Using SSI with WordPress".

Incidentally, for those who are still using traditional HTML editors to build websites, (URL in resource box at the end of this newsletter), and scroll down that page.  You’ll find a link to "Quick Guide to Using Server Side Includes".

3. Converting a site to WordPress
– — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — –

As mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I am putting together a course on how to move an old HTML site over to the WordPress platform while trying to preserve rankings and traffic.

The course is almost finished, but I am having to take a couple of weeks off work, so it is likely to be ready towards the end of this month now.  I just wanted to share a small success with the site I am moving over.

The site in question was built with Dreamweaver a few years ago, and has not been touched since.  It has been quietly making $2 – $3 a day in Adsense, and probably generating one affiliate sale a month.  Not great, but it was more than paying for itself.

The site is now about half-way converted.  Some of the pages still show the old site, while those that have been upgraded now show the new WordPress site.

This type of mongrel site is not pretty as it is using two completely different templates (old pages are still on the old template while converted pages now use the new WordPress template), but the beauty of this is that paggs aren’t lost during the transfer.

Pages of the old site are visible until they are switched.  This helps preserve rankings of all pages.  After the switch, the old pages are automatically redirected to the new WordPress version, and the search engines update the URLs of those pages in their index, meaning rankings are mostly preserved.

Even though the conversion is still not complete, I am monitoring the performance of the new pages.

The good news is that affiliate commissions are increasing.

Between the 16th February (the first pages were converted around this time) and the 6th March, the new pages had generated 8 affiliate commissions at Commission Junction.

Its a great start, and exciting one.  Once the site is fully converted, and new content added (using the themeing techniques I have been teaching in this newsletter over the last couple of years), I would expect this site to be generating multiple commissions per day.

As I mentioned earlier, the course is not yet ready.  When it is, I’ll be offering it at a reduced rate via this newsletter for a few days.  If you want to be notified when it is ready, you can sign up for notification here:

http://improdigy.com/html2wp.php

Note that this is a double opt-in form.  Once you fill in your details and hit the submit button, an email will be sent to you asking you to confirm you want to be added to the list.  You will not be added to the notification list until you click the link in that email.

Well, that’s it for this issue.  If you want to read the recent issues of this newsletter, you can read them online at my

    Andy,

    sorry to hear that your 3months old is going through a tough time and probably you, too. I don’t know anything about laryngitis since our boys didn’t have this but our 2yrs old one has been in Chelsea & Westminster hospital in London over Easter because of a kidney infection.

    Regarding any trauma developing, one can never really know and all my siblings and friends with children tell me how robust they are and how easily they forget. Which I can clearly see, too.

    It might sound a bit too early for you but I have from the start always ‘explained’ in simple positive words what’s going on and was on many occasions on the effect it had.

    Maybe it was just the effect that it had on us parents, calming us down, which is very important, I believe. Whenever I stay calm, they seem to get the idea that everything is ok.

    For a more scientific approach I can only suggest to search some child health issues related forums and sites. Other parents might have done the research you are looking for already.

    Good luck with your son and hopefully you’re getting some sleep.

    Karl
