EzSEO Newsletter # 271

In this issue:

1. LSI Studies

2. A Gift to help your New Years Resolution

Hi Again

It’s just two more days before Santa starts his long trip around the world.  I was going to miss the newsletter this week thinking that everyone would be too busy to read it, but I really did want to say Happy Christmas to you all.

I hope that after looking back over 2009 that you are happy with your progress, and that 2010 excites you.  To help you plan your attack on 2010, Michael Campbell is giving away a fantastic work book and I have the download URL below (no opt-in required)

During the last week, I have been running analyzes on well over 1000 web pages in Google in a number of different niches, looking for evidence that LSI and themeing are important in the web content you write.  That’s one of the reasons I am late with this newsletter, and also the reason this newsletter is so short.  Results of those tests are also below, so let’s get on.

1. LSI Studies
– — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — –

I don’t remember the date I started experimenting with "themeing" content. Certainly at the time, most people were talking about a primary keyword and secondary keywords used in some magical density, and placed in specific places on the web page.  As I registered my Creating Fat Content Course domain in August 2006, I would suspect that my experiments began in 2004.

I certainly wasn’t the first to look at this.  I seem to remember that Michael Campbell released a white paper in 2001 (I may be out +/- a year or two in that date) about word matrixes and how the search engines looked for themes in web pages.

I do remember when I started discussing my ideas in public that a lot of people laughed at them, and even today, a lot of "experts" still say that the search engines don’t rely on LSI for ranking.

Over the last 4 or 5 years, I have done a lot of research on this, and the evidence is clear – top ranked pages in Google have one thing in common – a niche/topic specific vocabulary.

What I mean by that is that the top ranked pages for a particular search phrase share a set of words and phrases.  As you move down the rankings for that particular phrase, the web pages start to "lose" some of those words and phrases, or as I like to think of it, they become LESS themed.

Rather than explain this, I have recorded a short video for you to watch.  The video shows you some of the results from this week’s research.

Hopefully the video will get you thinking about themeing.

An important point here is that those pages at the top of Google were most probably written by experts in their fields.  They most definitely didn’t sit there with a list of theme words checking them off as they wrote their articles.

You see, an expert in a field will automatically use the relevant "theme" words and phrases as they write their article, because these theme words and phrases are NECESSARY to write a good article on the topic.

Each topic you write about will have its own "vocabulary", or set of theme words.  Think about it.  What if you wanted to write an article on "Favourite Balti Curry Recipes".

Can you imagine being able to write that article without mentioning the following words:

chicken balti curry, chicken tikka masala, balti stir fry, curry recipe, balti curry, balti sauce, chicken balti, madras curry, chicken tikka, fresh coriander, curry paste, curry sauce, tomato pur?e, madras curry, finely chopped, chili powder, tikka masala, curry, recipes, balti, chicken, india, sauce, dish, vegetable, chopped, cooking, onion, spice, coriander, fry, lamb, fresh, ghee, meat, tomato, spices, chilli, medium, garlic, pepper, prawn, ground, masala, ginger, madras, onions, vindaloo, yogurt, chillies, cream, mince, naan, peppers, powder, raita, tikka, cauliflower, clove, crushed, egg, juice, rice, spicy, tomatoes, carrots, cumin, dates, pur?e, turmeric, butter, coconut, dhansak, garnish, korma, lemon, mushrooms, paprika, piaza, sauces, seafood

These are some of the "topic vocabulary" that would be used by an expert on Balti Curries.  They are the theme words that would be needed by that expert to write a good article on Favourite Balti Curry Recipes.  Imagine telling that expert to write an article on Balti curry without using any of those words.  You’d end up with an article that was absolute rubbish.

So where am I going with this?

Well, if you are an expert in the topic you are writing about, maybe you don’t need to worry too much about themeing as it will happen NATURALLY.  This is something that Google knows, so if they find a well-themed article, they have a pretty good idea that the article is good quality.  That is why we see the trends in the video as we move down the rankings.

On the flip-side, if you are writing content in an area you are not familiar with (or at least not an expert), then you will need to compile a list of theme words for that topic and make sure you cover them in your content.  By doing this, you can appear to be an expert in the field, because you have included the topics "vocabulary" in your article.

If you have any comments on LSI / Themeing, please leave them at the end of this newsletter.  Maybe you have employed these techniques on your own sites – I would love to hear what kind of results you have had.

Incidentally, I have been getting emails about the release date of Web Content Studio.  Please don’t ask, because I don’t know yet, but I will let you know in this newsletter when I know.

2. A Gift to help your New Years Resolution
– — – — – — – — – — – — – — – — –

At this time of year, many people start thinking about their New Year’s Resolution.  According to Wikipedia, this is:

".. is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as advantageous."

The usual ones include quit smoking, lose weight, spend more time with family, etc.  As an Internet marketer, we often make a resolution related to our online activities, so with that in mind, I have the perfect gift for you.  Its a workbook written by my friend Michael Campbell.

Michael is one of the greats online.  His teachings were responsible for getting me started online all those years ago, and for that I will be eternally grateful.  I will always remember having to contact his support to ask for the download details again for a product I had lost.  I was fully expecting one of his staff to answer, but I got an email from Michael himself.  Over the years, my respect for him has grown.  I can see Michael starting to blush as he reads this, so I better stop there – I think you get the point.

Michael has put together a workbook to help you start your own New Year REVOLUTION.  The Workbook is based on the exact same techniques he uses with his high paying clients, and he is giving it away to you for FREE – you don’t even need to give him your email address to download it.

Now before you go download this and then let if gather dust on your hard disk, be aware that this is a WORKBOOK.  It is not something to read on your computer.  As Michael says, go analogue, and print off a copy to read in a private, quiet place.  Site down with a coffee, a pencil (and eraser / rubber), and work your way through the process.  BY the time you have finished, you should have your plan for 2010.

2010 can be a great year online, no matter what happens in the bricks and mortar world.  Are you going to be looking back in one year thinking about the lost opportunities?

Download Michael Campbell’s Uncovery AND USE IT.

    Andy,

Very interesting video on LSI themeing. It’s an idea that I’m definitely going to pay more attention to starting right now. Looking forward to more about this when Web Content Studio is released.

Also, any chance of you devoting more time in next year’s newsletters to linking strategies? That’s a piece of the traffic puzzle I’m sure many of us could benefit from and I certainly include myself in the category.

Thanks for a great year of content and insights. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

  5. Carlos says:

    Hi Andy,

I really like your newsletter. It’s one of the handful that I read and that I really look forward to. Most newsletters from Internet Marketers don’t have enough valuable content by themselves. They are always trying to sell me something which is a real turn off which prompts me to unsubscribe quickly.

While you also try and sell me something from time to time (just like all of us do at one time or another) you blend such attempts very well into the middle of valuable content so I don’t hardly notice it.

    Well done!

Regarding what you said about LSI…for some time I have been writing that way (I think LOL). I don’t ghost my articles or have others write them. I take the time to become a sort of mini-expert on the topic I am writing about and then start to write from the standpoint of someone who now knows something of the subject matter at hand. I also purposely try and include phrases and words that are tied to the keyword phrase I am targeting but not always explicitly so.

Google has rewarded me with very decent initial placements in the SERP’s for many of my articles where I have done nothing more than write that way, registered a domain that is directly tied to the keyword I am targeting, and including outgoing, one-way links, to authority sites as references. No backlinks, no title tag, no meta tags…no nothing else.

Once an article initially places well…I then focus on the site as a whole adding more articles, backlinks, whatever to improve it’s initial good ranking.

This is working very well for me.

Thanks for your inspiration and shared insight!

I wish you the very best Holiday’s.

    Carlos

    Hello,
Thank you as always for the wonderful informative newsletter. The best tool I ever found was your website.

Just a short word about Michael Campbell and the amazing “The Uncovery” PDF. Thank you for including that in your newsletter. I have gone through the process and it is great.

I am a very long time fan of Michael. He is certainly one of the true “good guys” in this industry. Lately he has been having a bit of a hard time and those who are of the persuasion to send a “prayer” or “love and light” or whatever is appropriate for your spiritual beliefs it would be appreciated. Please see his website for details.
