I’ve had a lot of emails from people wondering where I have been for the last couple of months. I’m not sick, and I haven’t given up on Internet Marketing, or SEO. Far from it. However, I have been doing a lot of work on the book publishing side of my business, and it will remain a major investment of my time for the foreseeable future.
In this newsletter, I want to mention a few free tools I have been using to increase my productivity, enhance my sleep and sort out my spam comment problems. I’ve also got a special offer on my Kindle Publishing book, plus news of my first fiction book that has just been released.
1. Stop Spammers – A comment spam plugin that seems to work!
Want a spam comment plugin that actually does block 99% of spam comments on your WordPress site? Read my review of Stop Spammers.
2. 7 Sticky Notes – A great free program for PCs.
I used to have pieces of paper all over my desk and sticky notes on my computer monitor. Honestly, my office was a mess. Well actually, it still is a mess, but it is sticky note and paper free, which I guess is a start. You see, for the last few months I’ve been using a free software program for Windows, called 7 Sticky Notes.
You can easily add sticky notes on your desktop. If you use two monitors, like I do, then it’s easy to move all your sticky notes to one monitor, clearing up the other. This software is full of great features, like:
- Ability to change the colour of notes.
- Use different fonts.
- Add hyperlinks in the notes
- Set alarms for your notes, so you get notified at a certain time. This is great if you have a deadline because your screen can get full of notes, meaning you lose focus. The alarm feature will keep you on task.
- Organise notes into groups.
For a full set of features, check out the 7 Sticky Notes features page.
This program is fully compatible with Windows 8 (which I use). If you are looking for a sticky note style application for your PC, check this one out. I am sure you’ll love it.
3. F.Lux – Your computer keeping you awake?
I have suffered with sleep problems for many years, and I didn’t realise that it may be partly caused by my computer monitor. Apparently the blue light given out by computer screens, tablets and phones can upset your biological clock. You’d think I would have known that, wouldn’t you, being a biologist.
Anyway, I’ve just started using a free tool on my PC, tablet and phone, called F.Lux, that strips the blue light from the screen when it’s dark outside. I cannot tell you what effect it has had yet, as I have only been using it for a few days, but I have heard great things about this tool. It is also available for Mac and iOS. It’s not available on Android at the moment, but there is a similar tool on Android called Twilight.
4. My Kindle Publishing book on special offer for 2 days
I learned a lot about Kindle Publishing from Geoff Shaw, whose Kindling Course is still the very best out there. You can read my review here on that course, which, by the way just keeps getting better as Geoff works hard on creating new tutorials. However, for many people, especially at this time of year, it is perhaps $97 that you would prefer to spend elsewhere. For that reason, I have put my own Kindle Publishing book on special for the next two days. From 20th (starting at 8am PST, that’s 4pm GMT) to the same time on the 22nd December, you can get it for just $0.99. It’s a Kindle book, but if you don’t have a Kindle, don’t worry. You can read Kindle books on just about any computer, tablet or smartphone. Read my article here to explain how.
Unfortunately, I think that the discount may only be on the US Amazon because I had problems setting this up. However, I will redo the discount for the UK Amazon once this promo is over if that is the case. I just checked as this should be live now at the 0.99 price, but I don’t see it. Maybe it’s because I am not in the US and it is only available at that price for those that are?

5. My first fiction book released
I’ve written a number of non-fiction books now and published them on Kindle and Createspace. You can see the list here. However, I have always wanted to at least try my hand at fiction.
In November this year, my kids suggested I write up a short story that I tell them every Christmas, and publish it on Amazon Kindle, so that is exactly what I did. It’s a short story for kids called “When Golfo Saved Christmas”, and it offers parents an easy way to add a little extra magic to this time of year by leaving something under their Christmas tree for the kids to see. You can find out more about this on the website I set up for the book, called (obviously) When Golfo Saved Christmas.
