In my post “A good editor doesn’t have to cost a fortune”, I told you about Andy, the editor I use for my Kindle & Createspace books. In fact, today, Andy just finished 2 more of my books, meaning he has now proof-read and edited all of the Kindle books I have released. This latest job took him just 3 days from start to finish.

I have been getting a number of questions about Andy’s services. I don’t know why, I mean I gave you his contact information ;). On that page, he has a link to contact him, plus a cost calculator so you can work out exactly how much it would cost to get your book proof-read and edited. With so many people interested in hiring a good editor, I have decided to publish a list of FAQs that Andy wrote about his services. I’ve also tacked a couple of other questions on at the end, which he didn’t have covered.
Q. How much does it cost?
A. You can check out the cost by downloading this Excel spreadsheet and entering in the word count of your document.

Q. What is the turnaround time?
A. The amount of words that can be proofread in an hour/day varies according to the number and severity of a document's errors. In order to be thorough and methodical, proofreading is not a job that should be hurried in my opinion. On average, I aim for 6,000 – 9,000 words per day whenever possible.
Q. Do you offer a free sample?
A. Yes I do. In fact I wouldn't expect anyone to pay for a service like this without knowing what to expect. So I usually proofread a page or two for the potential customers to look over. This way, they can make a better informed decision before deciding whether to commit or not. I'm happy to report that everyone who has received a sample has decided to use me as their personal proofreader/editor.
Q. Is proofreading the same as editing?
A. No, there's actually a distinct difference between the two. Proofreading is the final stage of the editing process. It involves the careful reading of a document to detect for any errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar or sentence structure (word order). Corrections/suggestions may also be made to the format and layout of the work.
Editing, on the other hand, is a process that's carried out directly after the writer has finished the first draft. Editors strive to improve that draft by modifying or adapting it (potentially rewriting parts), so that the finished piece is as good as it can be. An editor's job is to focus on content, overall structure, clarity, and style etc.
Q. Do you edit as well as proofread?
A. Yes I do. Especially work submitted by non-native English writers, hence the slightly higher fees for that. Services offered for native English writers are mainly focused on proofreading, although I find that most jobs require some degree of editing too.
Q. Why are your rates so low?
A. I reside in a country where the cost of living is considerably less than the UK, so this allows me to be extremely competitive. There's a lot of competition out there, so I have to be competitive, both in quality of service and with the fees I charge, hence these low rates.
Q. How do you proofread/edit?
A. I proofread on-screen using MS Word's Track Changes tool, but can use others such as OpenOffice or LibreOffice if requested. Clients can then go through the finished piece and accept or reject the modifications at their convenience. I also send over a ‘clean copy' of the completed work (a document where all the changes have been accepted by me). I have prepared a page which outlines my suggestions for the working arrangement.
Q. What is the payment method?
A. The preferred method of payment is PayPal, but I will also accept Skrill (Moneybookers). 50% is required upfront with the final 50% settled on job completion and satisfaction of the client.
Q. You are British. Does that mean you can only proof-read and edit books by English authors, or can you also edit US books with Americanisms?
A. Yes I can adapt to any version of English. In fact, one of the first questions I ask new clients is what version of English would they like their work proofread and or edited in, and then set the dictionary accordingly. It quite usual to find a bit of a mishmash between American and British English, not so much with vocabulary, but the spelling of words.
Q. What format do you provide the final edited books in?
Usually I give the books back in the same format I receive them in. If I get a Word file, I return it as a Word file. I can provide books other formats on request.
Q. Can you also format the eBooks for direct uploading to Kindle?
A. Absolutely. I use a special formatting software called Sigil, which allows me to validate all the code every step of the way. This is great, because I know with confidence that the end file is 100% error free and will look good in .mobi, .epup, and AZW3. I can provide the customer with their book in any number of formats, including:
