Is it that time already I hear you ask? Well no it isn't, however I am moving the release of my newsletter to Sunday, so this newsletter could be delivered either be a few days late, or a few days early. My guess is that early is better than late. OK, onwards..

Today we are going to look at one of the most hotly discussed/ debated topics in the SEO world - META TAGS. We will also discuss the title tag and then finish with a brief discussion of filenames and domain names.

Before we begin, however, I want to quickly recap what we have done so far. Last chapter, we looked at the various tools available for researching keywords. We then went on to gather a list of keywords relevant to our website in preparation for building our site. The next few newsletters will tell you exactly what to do with those keywords so that your pages are optimized for the search engines.

A quick fact:

IF YOUR CHOSEN KEYWORD IS VERY COMPETITIVE, NO AMOUNT OF OPTIMIZING IT WILL GET IT TO THE TOP OF THE SEARCH ENGINES.

Take the keyword "viagra" for example. In Google, there are some 9 million plus web pages about Viagra. Optimizing your own page according to these newsletters will not get you into the top 10 or even top 100 for the search term viagra. Later in these newsletters, we will look at what else you will need to do (IN ADDITION TO web page optimization) if you are to compete in the major league.

Why am I telling you this now? Well, you have chosen keywords for your site by following last weeks newsletter, right? OK, go and look at the competition in Google for each term if you have not already done so - what the competition is like?

Chances of ranking well by web page optimization alone if COMPETITION is:
Less than 1000 - Great target keyword or phrase. Good chance of top 10 listing.
Between 1000 and 5000 - Getting tricky, but probably worth a go if there is a high number of monthly searches for this term.
Greater than 5000 - Web page optimization will become less important as other factors come into play. Don't dismiss these keywords altogether, but don't expect good rankings immediately.
Later in these newsletters, we will look at how to compete for these terms.
