Beginning of December 2003 Nikon announced that they would soon bring out on the market a fully new digital SLR camera with interchangeable lenses, so the Nikon D70 became a fact. dSLR: Nikon D70 brings you more, delivers gems of experience and information and takes your camera to the next level and the next. It was succeeded initially by the Nikon D70s and more recently by the Nikon D80, announced on August 9th, 2006. The price of the Nikon D70 with 18-70mm is something never before heard of and brings DSLR photography to the masses for the first time. Both the Nikon D70 and Canon EOS 300D/Digital Rebel are ground breaking with respect to their price/performance ratio. The Nikon D70 includes seven new automatic selections which include Auto, Close up, Sports, Portrait, Landscape and Night portrait and landscape. |
Images are very detailed, sharp with quality colour. Images are processed by 12bits on each color channel in case of the Custom Tone setting, But Jpeg files are 8 bits on each channel. It even has some better features and cleaner images than some fringe $5,000 professional DSLRs I tried at the time. The ability to fine-tune each WB preset is very important to getting great images and usually overlooked by photographers new to all this. The camera-indicated buffer size at NORMAL compression is 12 frames at large JPG, drops to 7 images when set to JPG medium (2,240 x 1,448 pixels) and goes up to 27 images when set to JPG small (1,504 x 1,000 pixels).
The D70 also appears to have quite a bit going for it which are the primary complaints for EOS 300D owners, flash exposure compensation being one of them. This gives the D70 the ability to have an electronic shutter and much faster flash sync than most other DSLRs recently introduced, including those five times as expensive. It actually works perfectly all the way up to 1/8,000 when used with any external flash, due to the D70's electronic shutter. In addition, the D70s features an increased 18 mm angle of coverage from its built-in flash; the flash on the D70 could only be used with lenses as wide as 20 mm.
Nikon D70 is a small, neat, and affordableentry into the new world of digital SLR photography. Nikon D70, in my opinion, is one of my best ever purchases.
