Amazon announce pre-ordering for KDP

This is quite an exciting development, and one that many Kindle publishers have been waiting for.

Now, as a Kindle publisher, you can make your new books available for pre-order in Kindle Stores.

The way it works is as follows:

  1. Create a pre-order page up to 90 days before your book will be released.
  2. Customers can pre-order your book any time in those 90 days, and will get it when it is released.

If you set your book up for pre-order, it means you can start promoting the book in advance, sending people to your pre-order page.  All pre-orders will contribute to sales rank of the book.

To set this up, you’ll see the new “Step 4” as you are adding your book – “Select Your Book Release Options”.  Simply select “Make my book available for pre-order” and set the date of release.  That’s all you need to do (other than get your book finished and released on time).

Pre-order books are listed in the Amazon marketplace, though I believe not India.

Requirements for Setting up Pre-Order?

  • You will need to upload a final draft copy of your book for review, at the time you set this up.  I guess they are doing this to make sure you will be ready on the release date.  Otherwise, I could see a lot of “marketers” gaming the system and setting up books for pre-order to test the market, then only completing those that show promise.
  • The final version of your book must be uploaded 10 days before the release date.
  • Public domain books are not eligible.
  • You can only have 10 titles in your account set for pre-order.
  • Credit for sales are when the customer downloads.  I wonder if this means the sales rank is calculated on the release date, as this would give you a much bigger boost in rankings on Amazon if that’s the case.  Anyone know about this?  Leave a comment below if you do.

Exciting times ahead for all Kindle publishers.  If you aren’t yet writing and publishing your own books on Kindle, you can read my review of the product (product discontinued) that got me started back on 17th July 2012.  You can also find out more about my own journey into Kindle publishing on a Facebook page I set up back on the 17th July 2012.  On that page, I shared my income reports for the first few months.  Here was my first one:

Obviously, things got a lot better!

  1. Hi Andy,
From what I’ve read, the pre-release gives you two bites at the promotional cherry. Firstly, pre-order sales count towards the book’s rank in the Kindle store, so your pre-order page can potentially get a nice bit of exposure. I’ve seen books ranked very highly using this tactic. Secondly, on the actual release day, all the credit cards are billed and those genuine sales count again towards the book’s Kindle ranking. Up until now it’s only been publishing houses that could do pre-order on Kindle, but that’s about to change, as you pointed out. However, traffic from an email list or popular website will probably be necessary to generate exposure for a book’s pre-launch page and I’m not sure how many indie author’s will have that.

    1. Thanks for the info Neil. Very interesting to see how this works out. I’ll have to see what I can do with my next release.
