I am a big fan of the Google Keyword Planner (formerly known as the Google Keyword Tool) as a free resource for keyword research. I do have frequent problems when trying to do some keyword research, in that if often returns an error instead of the list of keywords. But hey, it’s free!
Is it 100% reliable? No. But then neither are those tools that cost money but grab the data from the keyword planner.
Google’s Keyword Planner is a great tool for quickly finding keyword ideas, and carrying out a little bit of initial research. However, I am hearing an increasing number of voices telling me that you need to have an Adwords account and set up a campaign to use the Keyword Planner. This is simply untrue so I decided to record a quick video showing you why this rumour is spreading, and how you can actually use the Keyword Planner without setting up a campaign. All you need is a Gmail address.
If you have any comments, please leave them below. Thanks!

Thank you very much for this video regarding using the Keyword Planner tool without creating an Adwords campaign. I looked for hours on the Internet, but your video is the absolute best and the most understandable one. Thank you very much.
